Most famous restaurant in New Jersey, home to a million — or so it seems — restaurants?
That's according to Thrillist's rundown of the most famous or "iconic'' restaurants in Americastate by state. There are more diners in Jersey about than in any other state, "so it's fitting that a diner is the most iconic in the state,'' according to Thrillist.
Tops features a full bar and two full-time bakers whipping up fresh cheesecake, plus the usual diner-y fare of beef ribs, meatloaf, and burgers. George Golemis, father of current owners Jimmy and John Golemis, bought the diner in Open for 24 hours untilthe seat diner now shuts down for just two hours on Friday and Saturday nights, and is open until 1 a.
Best selling-dish at Tops? Chicken alfredo; the diner goes through about 4, pounds of chicken a week. More numbers: It's made of 50 percent brisket, short rib and chuck; lookkng percent veal and ground beef, and 25 percent turkey.
It shames every diner meatloaf out there. Good to see East Newark get some love, too.
The Hudson County town, once part of Kearny, is not widely known outside the area. It doesn't help that Tops' own web site lists the diner in Harrison.
