Butte is located in Southwest Montana in what is known as Montana's Gold West country. In the 1860's Butte's foundations were born when merchants and miners began settling there. Butte became known as one of the world's richest mineral reserves and miners began showing up with their tools in hand to start making their fortune on the gold, silver and huge reserves of copper ore found in "The Riches Hill on Earth".
It became known as a thriving metropolis and at the turn of the century, Butte was one of the largest cities west of the Mississippi. William A. Clark and Marcus Daly who were considered copper kings struggled with the balance of wealth, power and prestige that the rich findings brought them.
Today, the Copper King mansion is open for tours as the place where William Andrews Clark lived. It depicts for visitors how the wealthy lived in their day and makes up part of a rich historical district of old Victorian mansions and buildings. Many of the mansions there have been historically preserved and make up what is the nation's second largest historical district.
